Wow, getting out and riding with a group of motorcycle enthusiasts! It is one of the most enjoyable experiences and provides a superb opportunity to develop and build upon friendships. But, group riding requires that we all understand and take note of the basics of group riding. Adhering to a few basic guidelines will help everyone have a memorable and enjoyable ride.
Some key points to consider:
- Lead and sweep road captains have planned the route while considering speeds, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. However they aren't able to plan for each rider's experience. Rider experience depends on many things; length of time an individual has been riding, miles on a particular bike, load on the bike, previous group riding, etc.
- The ride is always pre-briefed and includes ride formation such as route, staggered formation, what to do if you have bike problems or if you are separated from the group, etc.
- Part of the pre-brief includes dividing the group into 2 or more groups of 8 - 10 riders for safety reasons. It is difficult for road captains to keep track to more riders so please help us ensure the safest possible conditions for all by dividing into smaller groups when asked to do so.
When riding in a staggered formation all participants must maintain their position i.e. left 1/3 or right 1/3 lane position, see diagram above. If you are more comfortable in a one lane position verses the other, then it should be addressed and sorted before departure. The easiest solution is to ask the person in front or behind you to trade places with you.
